North Whiteley Progress Report Autumn 2017

Cornerstone move delayed

Due to delays in starting Whiteley North this means that Cornerstone Primary School cannot move until September 2020 to ease disruption moving partway through an academic year.

Henry Cort Events

Henry Cort are hosting their annual firework display this Friday and tickets can be purchased from college reception or online www.henry-cort.hants.sch.uk/community/events up to midday on Friday (please be aware any tickets purchased online after 3:00pm on Wednesday will be available to collect on the gate). Tickets will also be on sale on the gate.

They have managed to secure entertainment before the fireworks, there will be bungee trampolines, bouncy castle, a performance by a hip-hop dance group and a fire-eater. There will be a catering and sweet van on-site as well. Friends of Henry Cort will be selling glow-sticks with the proceeds going towards some outdoor equipment for the college. Raffle tickets will also be on sale, details of some of the top prizes are attached for information. The raffle will be drawn after the display.

Events

Whiteley North starts in June 2018

The Whiteley North housing development is due to start in June 2018 following talks with councillors and developers. Legal discussions concerning the development are almost concluded.

The planning for three schools, new shops and 50 hectares of green space, was submitted by a consortium comprising Taylor Wimpey, Crest Nicholson, Bovis Homes and JGP Lakedale in October 2015. This was then approved by Winchest City Council.

Doubts about the lack of funding for road infrastructure halted plans until £20m was secured in August 2017 from central government, along with £15m from the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership. This will improve roads in the Whiteley estate, Rookery Avenue, Parkway and Junction nine of the M27 and will aim to reduce jams around Junction 9 on the M27.

Additional lanes will be added onto slip roads, the Parkway South roundabout and Whiteley Way approach. There will be an additional traffic lane on both M27 Junction 9 motorway off-slip roads; on the westbound on-slip road, and on the Whiteley Way approach. The existing short left-turn lane on Whiteley Way will be lengthened and additional lanes will be provided on the northern and southern sections of the roundabout. At Parkway South roundabout, a new larger, fully signal-controlled roundabout will be provided, with additional lanes on all approaches, on the Parkway exit road and on the roundabout itself.

Roads Timescales

Late 2018: £250m to convert M27 from J4 to J11 into a smart Motorway. (Adds extra lane instead of the Hard Shoulder)

Summer 2019: £20M to improve J9 with extra lanes, improve R1 with traffic lights, extend Bluebell Way to join Botley Road.

Congestion at peak times in this area has been notoriously bad for years and with a further 3,500 new homes in the planning it will just get worse. It is hope the improvements will finally allow people to access the shopping centre, cinema, restaurants and Business Park without delay. The additional £15 million of funding will be to widen Whiteley Way. All these works sit alongside the £150 million being invested by Highways England in the M27 Smart Motorway Scheme.

Whiteley North is expected to take 10 years to complete.

Henry Cort GCSE Results

Henry Cort celebrate another year of outstanding results
Students at The Henry Cort Community College are celebrating an excellent set of results. This is amidst the turbulence surrounding the GCSE changes and shifts in grade boundaries in a number of the key subjects. The unprecedented changes to English and Mathematics means that they cannot be directly compared to previous years as the exams have more challenging content and are assessed differently.
Last year 67% of our students gained the ‘gold standard’ of 5 higher grades at A*-C including English and Mathematics to achieve the college’s best ever results. We have, again, achieved equivalent results of 5+ GCSEs including the new 4+ measure in English and Mathematics (standard pass). The college has continued with its steady improvement and we are proud that 50% of our students have met the new ‘strong pass’ benchmark of achieving a 5+ in English and Mathematics.
The college boasts a tradition of high academic achievement in the English Baccalaureate (EBacc). This year the benchmark for this qualification was raised with the EBacc now consisting of a Grade 5+ in English Language and Mathematics and a C+ within History or Geography, two Sciences and a Language. Last year this would have included the equivalent of 4+ English/Mathematics. Over 30% of our students achieved the new Ebacc measure. We are particularly proud of this result as it continues our tradition of achieving excellent Ebacc results despite this becoming more rigorous.
In 2016 25% of our students achieved at least one A*-A grade, or equivalent, we are delighted that this year this figure has increased to over 58% with 330 top grades awarded.
We are proud of all of our students, including Head Boy, Kieran Elliot, who achieved 12 A- A* or equivalent including the new converted Grade 9 within all three of the new GCSE examinations: Mathematics, English Language and English Literature. Georgia McNee achieved 11 A-A* grades including a Grade 9 in English Language and Mathematics and A* in all other EBacc subjects. Other students who achieved notable success are Joshua Miller and Bradley Ferrand, with Joshua achieving 11 A*-A grades or equivalent and Bradley 10 A*-A grades or equivalent.
We had a number of other Grade 9 successes with Max Robinson in English Language and Kaushal Vaisnav in Mathematics.
Special mention goes to Tyler Beech who achieved 11 A*-C including a Grade 7 in Mathematics and ‘A’ grades in Additional Science, Citizenship and P.E. Tyler underwent several serious operations during the period of his exams.
The Henry Cort Community College is again very proud of the students and excited about the futures that these results open up. Principal, Claudia Cubbage, said ‘I am delighted with the results, students and staff have worked hard to achieve an excellent set of outcomes and I wish all students success in the future’.

A Professional Development Opportunity for all managers and businesses

The Solent Leadership Academy, partly funded by the Solent LEP, delivers training through a higher apprenticeship model, in leadership and Management.

Investing in your staff now, would make you a Leader. “Leaders don’t create followers they create more leaders” - Tom Peters - so start now and you will see results one day earlier than if you wait until tomorrow

Evidence shows that investment in leadership and management has a positive impact on bottom line business performance.

The Solent Leadership Academy, partly funded by the Solent LEP, delivers training through a Higher Apprenticeship model, providing a highly cost effective solution for local employers to support their workforce in achieving this objective.

Our initiative is designed to increase the proportion of local managers with a Level 4 and 5 Leadership and Management qualification, with training aimed at supervisors and middle managers who are looking to develop their skills in order to prepare for senior management roles.

About Us

Having been born in Hampshire I care about my community and wanted to provide a community website for Whiteley. I wish to see the area prosper in every way including culturally, economically and socially. The green agenda is high at the moment so I wish to promote a strong local economy based on local services, traders and producers. Hopefully this website can enhance the communities quality of life and allow you to precipitate in making Whiteley a better place to live and work in.

The site is written by and for people who live or work in Whiteley. It acts as a community bulletin board and an online news and campaigning service for people who are interested in their neighbourhood. The general comparison I make is with community newsletters - although a website like this this is much quicker, there is no way we could reach this many people with a newsletter.

There is a only one volunteer who writes at the moment drawing on local information from newspapers, councillors, councils, residents, parish council, local businesses, surfing and contributions from people like you. We tend to cover Whiteley and the surrounding area from Fareham, Park Gate, Titchfield, Sarisbury and as far as Winchester. This site is not affiliated to any political group and receives around 3000 - 4000 unique visitors per month, depending upon the range of issues posted and the time of year.

We are always delighted when people comment on the issues raised because without your contributions to the site then the site is stagnant and worthless. Feel free to get in touch any time.
